Here are some common questions about InnerLifeSkills.
What is Life Coaching?
Coaching is the specialized art of holding solution focused conversations.
Coaching supports a client in being able to access insights and solutions from within. Through coaching someone, you are able to help them move into a positive, proactive mindset and to take clearly defined action that aids them in achieving their potential in the area of their goals and objectives.
How is coaching different to training, mentoring and counselling?
Do I need to be qualified to call myself a coach?
The short answer is, no.
Check in your country, but in most countries, there are no legal restrictions on the term “coach.” It’s then a question of integrity. So to call yourself a professional coach, we suggest that you get some kind of ICF accredited coach training. Not only does this boost your credibility, but it will help you to feel confident that you are offering world-class benchmarked coaching.
How do I know if I have what it takes to be a coach?
We suggest that you first check that you understand what internationally benchmarked professional coaching is and isn’t, then use this checklist and guide.
The short answer is that if you can have conversations with people and are willing to learn incredibly helpful coaching communication skills, then you have the most important foundation. Have a look at our Roadmap to see what 12 steps are needed to become a successful professional coach.
What does a typical Life coach session look like?
All coaching sessions that are run by ICF aligned coaches need to have the following in common.
- A coaching agreement and contract (defined client lead outcome for the session)
- Solutions to achieve the long-term goal
- Measures of success
- Action plans
- Accountability reinforcement
This is a basic ACC (Associate level coaching session). Professional PCC and Master level MCC coaching go way beyond this foundation. Read more about the 3 ICF levels of coaching and what they look like.
What is the difference between life coaching, business coaching, executive coaching, youth coaching etc?
All these forms of coaching have the same core coaching competencies, just like professional singing has the same basics. Each genre of singing is a different application and audience. Coaching is the same.
- Life coaching is focused on general life topics for a general public audience.
- Business coaching is focused on business related topics for a business audience.
- Executive coaching is focused on the topics that executives face and is likewise in service to executives.
- Youth coaching focuses on the topics that youth face and is in service to youth markets.
Because pure coaching does not give advice, the same master communication competencies can be applied to any speciality. In blended coaching, where we mix mentoring with coaching, we would need to have expertise in the area we are coaching.
What is the InnerLifeSkills coaching philosophy?
Everyone has Inner Wealth, but without an Inner Well, we go thirsty!
InnerLifeSkills is a unique coaching methodology that equips you to build Inner Wells for life and work. And, InnerLifeSkills equips you to transform inner obstacles into inner resources.
How do online classes work?
How do I attend an online coach class?
You will receive a link to click on to access the online class. Wait for the date and time of the weekly class, then click the link to join. An application will load to show you the class screen. When fellow classmates arrive you will see their names and if they have their webcams on you will see them. When the trainer arrives they will say hello and start the class.
You are able to speak to the trainer and classmates.
What you will need is a good quality high-speed internet connection and a device to log in with. A computer or laptop is ideal, but an iPad or smartphone works too. If your internet is down, you can call in via the phone number provided to listen and interact with the trainer and classmates.
What if I miss a class?
If you miss a class, you have the chance to catch up that class at a later stage. Classes are also recorded, which gives you the opportunity to listen to the class and catch up on the content covered, before the next class.
An 80% overall class attendance is required to receive your certification.
Isn't online training impersonal?
Surprisingly it can be more personalized than venue classes if done well. There are online classes out there that are not done well, students just listen to a phone call, like a conference call. This doesn’t work very well.
We make sure that the classes are very interactive and enjoyable. The trainer is live on video, so you can see and listen to them. You have the option to switch your video on which means we’ll be able to see you. This makes it like a real virtual classroom. We laugh, share and work together.
There is also a type chat area which adds another layer of interaction.
Our students always tell us how amazed they are by the depth and personal connection we create on our online classes.
How do we practise coaching online?
The software we use for our online classes truly creates a virtual class environment. And with the click of a button, the trainer is able to assign you to a separate room with one or more of your classmates. In the privacy of a breakout room, you are able to practice your coaching.
An added benefit is that the trainer will pop in to visit you while you are coaching, to offer you valuable support and feedback.
As soon as the breakout room practical session is finished, you click a button to leave the breakout room and rejoin the main classroom. The screen simply changes to the main classroom area. Simple and easy.
Coach Business Building
How do I build a coaching business?
Follow our InnerLifeSkills 12 step roadmap to build a successful coaching business.
Make sure that you first do your research, so that you know what coaching is and isn’t so that you choose the right coaching course for you. Secondly, make sure that you acquire more than ACC coaching competencies. I would aim for Master Level (MCC) so that your skills open doors for you around the world. Also, make sure that you have a comprehensive coaching toolbox so that you can coach any topic and any niche market. The third phase of your coach business building is about marketing and building an ethical service based coaching business.
The InnerLifeSkills coach training includes all of the above. We also offer you our 1-year mentored coach business building program. Being guided step-by-step, to build a coaching business is invaluable.
How do I get my first paying clients?
Firstly don’t make the mistake of thinking that you need to have a business card and website in order to get your first paying clients. If you must build a site, create a small one that simply establishes your credibility and online presence.
What we teach our students, is it the most important way to get your first paying clients is to have what we call “sticky conversations” with different potential markets. These are casual conversations where you establish the priority needs and problems that plague your markets. Once you are clear on the problems that your market are experiencing, it becomes easier to customize a coaching product solution that they will be interested in.
Far too many new coaches, try to polish and create a perfect coaching offering before they have even begun to really have conversations with their clients. This can be devastating to a new coaching business.
Many of our successful coaches are out there in the world booked solidly for months ahead, without having a business card or website. In fact, some of them are too busy to get around to making a website. I’m not saying that a website is not important, it is, but it should be built later when you have established that you have a viable market as well as a viable coaching service to offer.
Have a look at our business building section of our site blog for lots of valuable tips and teachings on how to build a coaching business.

What are the assessments like?
We understand that nobody likes assessments, but they are important, they validate that you truly have the skills that you set out to master.
We assess at two levels, PCC and MCC.
We help you by giving you a mock “gap analysis” assessment before you submit for the final practical assessment. This gap analysis assessment will give you valuable feedback so that you know exactly what to improve on before submitting the final assessments.
Assessments include an online theory assessment plus a practical assessment. For the practical assessment, you record an audio coaching session with yourself and a client. You send in the recorded coaching session for marking. Detailed feedback is given to every student. Every student has the opportunity to resubmit one more assessment should they not make the 70% passing grade. 95% of our students pass the first time.
Other than online classes, what else do students get?
Every module of the course includes an online resource where you will find additional notes, downloads, audio and video tutorials and demonstrations. This includes audio recordings of actual assessments from alumni students so that you can hear what distinction and passing grade coaching sounds like.
This free added value online resource is so comprehensive that it will help you to go from entry-level coaching to master coaching step-by-step. Your classes become an added bonus, where you are able to ask questions, be given guidance and of course practice your coaching.
Life Coach Certification
What is coaching certification?
Some people use the word certification to mean qualification or to receive a certificate when you pass a final assessment. Others mean international credentialing, for example with the International Coach Federation (ICF). To be credentialed with the ICF, you supply them with proof that you can coach at 1 of the 3 competency levels ACC (Associate), PCC (Professional) or MCC (Master).
InnerLifeSkills offers you both certification, a certificate for passing final assessments, as well as ICF accredited training hours which you can use to be credentialed with the ICF.
Certification gives you the confidence and credibility required to stand proudly as a coach anywhere in the world, knowing you have the skills to change lives.
Why is ICF accreditation important?
Because the term, “coach” is not a protected legal term, anyone can use the term — in other words anyone can call themselves a coach. This means that in the world of coaching you get a wide range from charlatans to respectable professionals.
The ICF sets the “gold standard” of coaching in the world. Clients know that when they’re dealing with an ICF credentialed coach, they are dealing with the true professional that has been tested for competency and ethics.
For you, completing an ICF accredited course gives you the confidence and competency you need to change lives. You can rest in the knowledge that you are doing your best for your clients. And you can charge higher rates than your colleagues that do not have ICF credentialing.
Achieving a master level of coaching is a great achievement. It is worth striving for even if you don’t plan to be credentialed with the ICF.
How do I get ICF credentialed?
Please check the ICF website for the latest on their credentialing pathways. At the time of this writing, you will need the following to apply to the ICF for credentialing:
Coach training hours (attending a coaching training course, where ACTP courses are given preference), a coaching log (evidence that you have coached professionally for clients) and their online theory test (which they used to check your understanding of the ICF core competencies and code of ethics).
What ICF accreditation does InnerLifeSkills offer?
Every module of every short course that InnerLifeSkills offers is accredited by the ICF. This means that it has been checked and audited to comply to the goal standards set by the international coaching profession.
ILS Master Coach, our top qualification is ACTP accredited. All other short courses we offer count as credits towards this qualification. Every hour can also be used as Continued Coach Education (CCE) hours or as Approved Coach Specific Training Hours (ACSTH).
When you pass the InnerLifeSkills final assessment, your certificate from us will include the ICF accredited hours.
