LIFE COACHING LESSON #3: Life Coach any goal.

This on-ramp coaching demonstration shows you how to coach a client/coachee on their coaching “Theme”, “Goal” and “Session focus” which we call a coaching “Contract”. The tutorial demo video is below.

This coaching method is a critical foundation coaching skill that our ILS Trainers have taught around the globe to life coaches, managers who coach, leaders, youth coaches, school teachers and business coaches. It seems easy, but it’s tricker than it looks (especially contracting). Contracting in itself has many applications including formal life coaching sessions, formal business coaching sessions, as a better way to create agendas for meetings and creating a focus for a training session, etc.

This is an actual ILS Coach Process (one of over 50) that is taught in our ILS Master Coach qualification course.

 

Remember that a goal can also be called:

  • an aspiration
  • a dream,
  • a target
  • an objective
  • desired outcome
  • a hoped-for future

Learn to tell the difference between themes, goals and coaching session ‘contracts’

It takes our coach students a while to grasp the difference between a coaching Theme, Goal and Contract. Most people understand goals and themes, but contracting is a specialized coaching skill that when mastered is so powerful.

When I mark final assessments (recordings of our coach students coaching someone), so that we can award our ICF internationally accredited qualification as ILS Master Coach, I spend the first 10-20 minutes assessing how well they can contract. This is almost always a predictor of how well the rest of the session will go. A poor contract usually means a poor session. A great contract usually means a great session.

For now focus on clarifying goals, asking yourself and others, “What do I really want?”
